Sciatica

Sciatica is an umbrella term for conditions that can cause irritation to the sciatic nerve. Book your Physiotherapy appointment for a clear assessment and diagnosis

Sciatica is a type of pain caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the body. The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back down through the hips, buttocks, and each leg.

People with sciatica often describe:

  • Sharp, shooting pain down the leg

  • Burning or electric-shock sensations

  • Numbness or tingling

  • Muscle weakness in the affected leg

  • Pain that worsens when sitting and during the night

Sciatica is a symptom, not a condition itself. It’s usually caused by:

  • A herniated disc pressing on the nerve

  • Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)

  • Piriformis syndrome (tight piriformis muscle)

  • Degenerative disc disease

  • Spondylolisthesis

  • ..and many more
